Spiti Valley Package from Manali

There are two ways into Spiti Valley. One takes you through gradual mountain passes, apple orchards, and ancient temples. The other launches you straight into the deep end. A Spiti Valley package from Manali is the second one and it is the one most travellers remember for the rest of their lives.

The Manali route crosses the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, then climbs to Kunzum Pass at 15,059 feet before dropping into Spiti. The landscape changes so abruptly after Rohtang that it feels less like a drive and more like a portal. Within a few hours, the green valleys and waterfalls of Manali are replaced by raw, bone-dry mountain terrain that stretches as far as you can see in every direction.

Viacation's Spiti Valley packages from Manali are designed around this experience. Whether you are planning a road trip, a spiti bike trip, or a group expedition, our packages give you the right vehicle, the right guide, and the right itinerary for the route. Our Spiti Valley packages start at ₹12,000 per person and include mountain transport, verified stays, local expertise, and 24x7 support throughout your time in the valley.

This is not a trip for the hesitant. If you have made up your mind, we will take it from there.

Why Manali Is the Ideal Base for a Spiti Trip

Manali sits at 2,050 metres and gives you a crucial acclimatisation day before you push toward Kunzum Pass and Kaza. It is well-connected by Volvo bus from Delhi overnight, has a strong traveller infrastructure, and is the starting point for the most exciting stretch of the entire Spiti circuit. Most spiti valley packages from manali use a one-night Manali halt specifically for this reason. Skipping it and rushing directly toward Kunzum Pass is one of the more common mistakes first-time high-altitude travellers make.

With Viacation, your acclimatisation day in Manali is built into the plan. Our team briefs you on the road conditions, altitude progression, and what to expect before you depart the following morning. You are not just a booking reference number with us.

Summer (Mid-June to September) — The Only Window, and Worth Every Bit of It

This is when the Manali route comes alive. The pass opens, the road toward Batal and Losar becomes driveable, and the entire Spiti circuit is accessible. Manali to Kaza: What the Road Actually Feels Like

The Manali to Kaza stretch is roughly 202 km but it takes a full day and crosses some of the most demanding terrain on Indian roads. Understanding what the drive involves helps you prepare mentally and physically.

Manali to Spiti via Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass

After leaving Manali, you enter the Atal Tunnel, the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. On the other side, the landscape changes immediately. The green pine forests of Manali are gone. What replaces them is Lahaul, a wide, cold valley carved by the Chandra River. The road follows the Chandra River through Gramphu and Batal before climbing sharply to Kunzum Pass.

Kunzum Pass at 15,059 feet is the gateway to Spiti. Most travellers stop here for a few minutes, take in the views, and pay respects at the small Kunzum Mata temple before descending into the valley. The drive from Kunzum to Losar to Kaza is the final stretch and each kilometre feels increasingly remote and surreal.

1. Best Time: Mid-June to mid-October

2. Total Distance: Approx. 202 km (Manali to Kaza)

3. Travel Time: 8 to 10 hours including stops

4. Difficulty: High (water crossings, loose gravel near Batal, sharp climbs to Kunzum Pass)

5. Full Route: Manali to Atal Tunnel to Gramphu to Batal to Kunzum Pass to Losar to Kaza

6. Route Highlights:

  1. Atal Tunnel, the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 ft
  2. Chandra River valley in Lahaul, strikingly different from anything in Manali
  3. Batal, a tiny settlement with the famous Chacha Chachi Dhaba
  4. Chandra Taal Lake as an optional overnight detour just before Kunzum Pass
  5. Kunzum Pass at 15,059 ft with panoramic views and the Kunzum Mata temple
  6. The descent into Losar, your first village inside Spiti Valley

What You Should Know Before Entering Spiti from Manali

The Manali route demands more from your vehicle, your body, and your preparation than the Shimla route. Knowing what to expect removes the anxiety and lets you focus on the experience.

Travel Tips

  1. Get a Rohtang Pass permit before your departure date. It is available online at the Himachal Pradesh government portal and is required for all vehicles crossing Rohtang.
  2. The Atal Tunnel is a paid toll road. Keep cash ready.
  3. Water crossings between Gramphu and Batal are real. Do not attempt them in a low-clearance vehicle after heavy rain.
  4. Carry enough cash from Manali. The only ATMs between Manali and Kaza are in Kaza itself and they run out frequently.
  5. BSNL is the only network inside Spiti. Download offline maps and save all key contacts before leaving Manali.
  6. Altitude gain is rapid on the Manali route. Spend at least one night in Manali before starting toward Kunzum Pass.
  7. Start the Manali to Kaza drive as early as possible. Roads near Batal can get congested in peak summer months.

Things to Pack

  1. Heavy woollens and thermals (temperatures drop sharply after Atal Tunnel)
  2. Windproof jacket
  3. Sunscreen SPF 50+ (UV exposure is intense at altitude)
  4. Trekking shoes with ankle support
  5. Power bank and extra charging cables
  6. Diamox and a basic first aid kit
  7. Sufficient cash in smaller denominations
  8. Valid government photo ID
  9. Offline maps for Lahaul-Spiti region
