Ngawang Namgyal, also known as the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, was a Tibetan Buddhist lama who unified Bhutan in the 17th century and is considered the founder of the Bhutanese nation-state. Born in 1594 in Tibet, he fled to Bhutan in 1616 to escape religious persecution and established a dual system of governance combining spiritual and temporal authority. Ngawang Namgyal built several dzongs (fortress-monasteries), including the famous Punakha Dzong, and introduced many administrative and religious reforms. He played a crucial role in shaping Bhutan’s identity, culture, and national unity. His legacy continues to influence Bhutan's governance and spiritual life today.

The National Museum of Bhutan, located in Paro, stands proudly atop a hill overlooking the beautiful valley and Paro Dzong. Originally built in 1649 as a watchtower called Ta Dzong, it was converted into a museum in 1968. Rinpung Dzong, also known as the “Fortress of the Heap of Jewels,” is a majestic fortress-monastery located in Paro, Bhutan. Built in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it serves as both a religious center and the administrative headquarters of the Paro district.
