Ngawang Namgyal, also known as the Zhabdrung Rinpoche, was a Tibetan Buddhist lama who unified Bhutan in the 17th century and is considered the founder of the Bhutanese nation-state. Born in 1594 in Tibet, he fled to Bhutan in 1616 to escape religious persecution and established a dual system of governance combining spiritual and temporal authority. Ngawang Namgyal built several dzongs (fortress-monasteries), including the famous Punakha Dzong, and introduced many administrative and religious reforms. The National Museum of Bhutan, located in Paro, stands proudly atop a hill overlooking the beautiful valley and Paro Dzong.
