Mawsmai Cave is a natural limestone cave located in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, approximately 6 km from Cherrapunji (Sohra) and 58 km from Shillong. Known as one of the most accessible caves in India, it features a 150-metre lit pathway that allows beginners to experience dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations without technical gear. Mawsmai Cave is structured for short tourist visits, often included in Meghalaya tour packages, and does not require technical exploration experience.
Mawsmai Cave is introduces travellers to Meghalaya’s larger underground limestone network in a simplified and accessible format. Meghalaya contains some of India’s longest and deepest cave systems, and Mawsmai works as an entry-level experience for visitors unfamiliar with cave exploration. The cave showcases natural geological processes through visible stalactites, stalagmites, and water-shaped rock textures formed over thousands of years.
Its importance also lies in accessibility. Unlike remote caves requiring guides and advanced preparation, Mawsmai Cave allows regular travellers to experience Meghalaya’s cave environment without difficult trekking or technical equipment.
The best time to visit Mawsmai Cave in Cherrapunji is during the winter and pre-monsoon months, from October to March/April, when the weather is dry and pleasant. These months offer the safest and most comfortable conditions for exploring the limestone formations without the heavy rains and slippery paths found during the monsoon season.
From Shillong, shared sumos and private taxis for Cherrapunji are available near Police Bazaar, costing around ₹400 - ₹500 per person for shared transport or ₹3,000 - ₹4,500 for private cabs. After reaching Cherrapunji, Mawsmai Cave is about 15 - 20 minutes away by local taxi or rented scooter.
