About Khasi Hills

Khasi Hills is a hilly region in Meghalaya, known for its high rainfall, green landscapes, and unique living root bridges. The region includes places like Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Mawlynnong, forming a connected travel circuit. It is not a single attraction but a wider geographical area where travellers move between waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints over multiple days.

Most Meghalaya tour packages structure the Khasi Hills as the core region of the itinerary, distributing travel across nearby locations rather than staying in one place. This helps cover both natural sites and village experiences without long travel gaps between stops.

Significance of Khasi Hills

The Khasi Hills hold ecological and cultural importance due to their unique landscape and the indigenous Khasi community. The region receives some of the highest rainfall in the world, shaping dense forests, waterfalls, and river systems. This constant moisture has enabled the growth of living root bridges, a traditional bio-engineering practice where tree roots are guided to form functional pathways over streams.

Culturally, the Khasi tribe follows a matrilineal system, where lineage and inheritance pass through women, which is distinct from most parts of India. The combination of environmental adaptation and cultural structure makes the Khasi Hills significant beyond tourism, offering insight into how communities evolve with their surroundings.

Best Time to Visit Khasi Hills

The best time to visit the Khasi Hills is from October to April, offering pleasant, dry weather suitable for sightseeing, trekking, and visiting waterfalls. Waterfalls still have good flow post-monsoon, and roads are more accessible. Daytime travel between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM is ideal, as fog and low visibility can increase by evening, especially in higher areas.

How to Reach Khasi Hills

Reach Guwahati first, which has the nearest airport and railway station. From Guwahati, the Khasi Hills can be accessed by road via shared taxis or private cabs, taking around 3 to 4 hours (100 - 120 km) to Shillong. Costs range from ₹500 (shared) to ₹3,000 (private). From Shillong, local taxis connect to other areas.
