Dawki River is a clear-water river located near the India–Bangladesh border in Meghalaya. It flows through the town of Dawki and is known for its transparent water, especially in the winter months. The river area includes boating points, suspension bridges, and open riverbanks for short visits.
The River is commonly part of day trips planned under Meghalaya tour packages, along with nearby spots like Mawlynnong and the living root bridges. Travellers usually go boating, walk along the river edge, and stop at the border viewpoint before returning the same day.
Dawki River, also known as Umngot River, has been part of local trade routes between India and Bangladesh for years. The nearby Dawki town functions as an important border crossing point, which still sees movement of goods and people under regulated access.
Over time, the river gained attention because of its water clarity, especially during dry months. It slowly became one of the most visited spots in Meghalaya, not for history or monuments, but for a simple, visual experience that stands out.
Visit between November and April when the water is clear and calm. The temperature stays around 10–20°C. The monsoon season (June to September) is when water turns muddy, currents get strong, and boating activity may stop completely. You can skip this season if you don't like slippery surfaces. If you want to see the real beauty, then visit during these times.
From Shillong, Dawki is about 80 km. A cab takes 2.5 to 3 hours (₹2,500–₹4,500). Shared taxis and buses(₹200–₹400) are also available. Roads are scenic but narrow in parts, so travel during daylight hours is recommended.
Entry Fee: Free
