Siju Cave is a limestone cave system located near the Simsang River in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. Known for its long underground passages, the cave has naturally formed chambers, narrow sections, and bat colonies inside. Some parts are lit for visitors, while deeper sections remain less explored.
Unlike the more crowded attractions in the Khasi Hills, Siju Cave attracts travellers interested in caves and offbeat routes. It is often added to Meghalaya tour packages covering the Garo Hills, especially by visitors looking for nature-based experiences beyond waterfalls and viewpoints.
Siju Cave is considered one of the longest cave systems in India. It formed naturally over thousands of years through limestone erosion caused by underground water flow. This process created narrow tunnels, large chambers, and rock formations inside the cave.
The cave became known during the British period when explorers and researchers started documenting cave systems in the Garo Hills. It is also called the “Bat Cave” because of the large bat colonies living inside. Some sections remain unexplored even today due to difficult underground passages and water-filled areas.
Visit between October and April for safer cave access and dry conditions. Temperatures stay around 18–28°C. Avoid the monsoon season as water levels rise and cave sections become slippery and difficult to enter.
From Shillong: A road journey from Shillong to Siju Cave takes around 9–10 hours. Travellers usually hire private cabs, as direct public transport options to the cave area are limited.
From Tura: Siju Cave is about 130 km from Tura. The drive takes around 4–5 hours by cab through the Garo Hills roads with limited shared transport availability.
