Shnongpdeng is a picturesque riverside village in the West Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, located roughly 8 km from the town of Dawki near the India-Bangladesh border. It is most famous for the Umngot River, which features water so crystal-clear that boats often appear to be floating in mid-air. Compared to the more crowded Dawki, Shnongpdeng offers a quieter, more “raw” nature experience, making it a hub for adventure tourism and riverside camping.
Shnongpdeng is very rare as it is only included in customised Meghalaya tour packages and offers experiences like boating, cliff jumping, kayaking, and camping instead of fixed city exploration. We at Viacation suggest most travellers to spend one night here to experience both daytime river activities and the quieter atmosphere after sunset.
Shnongpdeng has gained importance as one of Meghalaya’s strongest examples of eco-tourism built around natural river preservation. The clarity of the Umngot River is directly connected to strict local management and limited industrial activity in the surrounding region. Unlike heavily commercialised tourist towns, the village still functions through community-led tourism, where local residents manage campsites, boating activities, and visitor movement.
The best time to visit Shnongpdeng is during the winter months, from November to February, for the clearest water and optimal water sports like kayaking and cliff jumping. Another excellent period is March to April, when the weather is comfortably warm for camping and activities. Visit early mornings between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM for better visibility for boating. Monsoon months usually reduce water clarity and may temporarily stop adventure activities.
From Shillong, Shnongpdeng is around 3 to 4 hours away by road, covering approximately 95 kilometres. Shared taxis and private cabs regularly operate towards Dawki, costing around ₹400 – ₹3,500 depending on transport type. From Dawki market area, Shnongpdeng village is another 7–8 kilometres, usually covered by local taxi or bike rides.
