The Fort Museum in Chennai, established in 1948 within Fort St. George, offers a captivating glimpse into India's colonial past. Housed in a historic 1795 building, it showcases over 3,600 artifacts across ten galleries spanning three floors. Visitors can explore military memorabilia, including weapons, uniforms, and medals from the British era, as well as personal items of British and Indian dignitaries. The museum's portrait gallery features paintings of notable figures like Queen Victoria and Robert Clive. Other exhibits include colonial-era porcelain, coins, and original letters from historical personalities. A significant highlight is the display of the first Indian national flag hoisted on August 15, 1947. The museum also houses a 14.5-foot statue of Lord Cornwallis and artifacts from St. Mary's Church, the oldest Anglican church in India. Open from 9 AM to 5 PM (closed on Fridays), the Fort Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts seeking to delve into Chennai's rich heritage.
