About Five Rathas

The Five Rathas, also known as Pancha Rathas, is an iconic rock-cut monument complex located in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. Carved from a single granite rock during the 7th century by the Pallava dynasty, the site is a stunning example of ancient Dravidian architecture. Each of the five monolithic structures is shaped like a chariot (ratha) and is named after the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi from the epic Mahabharata—Dharmaraja, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula-Sahadeva, and Draupadi. Though never consecrated or used for worship, the Rathas showcase intricate carvings, detailed sculptures, and distinct architectural styles. Surrounded by majestic animal sculptures, including a life-sized elephant, the site reflects the artistic brilliance of Pallava craftsmanship. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Five Rathas remains a popular tourist destination and an important piece of India’s architectural heritage.
