Weinia Waterfalls (also known as Kshaid Weinia) is a massive, powerful waterfall located in the West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, India. Plunging from a height of approximately 60 to 1,000 feet into a deep gorge carved by the Kynshi River, it is known for its raw, untouched beauty and the heavy mist that often fills the surrounding valley. Weinia Falls is untouched, with fewer crowds and limited tourist infrastructure around the site. The waterfall drops into a wide rocky basin, especially dramatic during and after the monsoon season when water flow increases significantly.
Travellers who want to explore hidden places to visit in Meghalaya, Weinia waterfall must be included in Meghalaya tour packages. On top of that, you can combine it with other nearby places like Nongkhnum Island, suspension bridges, and nearby riverside viewpoints during a full-day exploration.
Weinia Falls is significant because it represents Meghalaya’s lesser-explored natural landscape beyond the state’s mainstream tourist zones like Cherrapunji and Dawki. The waterfall forms part of the larger Nongkhnum region, which remains comparatively less urbanised and still depends heavily on natural terrain rather than developed tourism infrastructure.
All this makes it attractive for travellers looking for quieter locations without completely disconnecting from basic road connectivity.
The best time to visit Weinia Falls is from September to February, when water flow remains strong, and the weather stays comfortable for outdoor exploration. Early mornings and late afternoons offer clearer views and softer sunlight. Monsoon months create heavier flow, but may make surrounding paths slippery and harder to navigate safely.
Reach Shillong first from Guwahati by shared taxi or bus, which usually takes 3 - 4 hours. From Shillong, hire a private taxi towards Nongkhnum Island via Nongstoin, covering around 90 - 100 kilometres in nearly 3.5 - 4.5 hours.
Shared transport is limited after Nongstoin, so private cabs are the most practical option, usually costing ₹3,500 - ₹5,500 for a round trip. From the parking area, a short walk leads towards Weinia Falls viewpoints.
