Simtokha Dzong, located just outside Thimphu, is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most historically significant fortresses. Built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was the first dzong to combine both administrative and monastic functions. The name "Simtokha" means “Atop a Demon,” referring to the legend that it was constructed on a site where a demon was subdued. The dzong features traditional Bhutanese architecture with intricate wood carvings and ancient murals. Today, it houses the Institute for Language and Cultural Studies, preserving Bhutan’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Simtokha Dzong remains a symbol of Bhutan’s spiritual strength and political unity.
