About Periyar River

The Periyar River, often called the lifeline of Kerala, flows through the heart of the state, spanning approximately 244 kilometers. Originating from the Western Ghats at the Sivagiri hills, it is Kerala’s longest river and a vital water source for millions. The river nurtures rich biodiversity, flowing through dense forests, wildlife sanctuaries like Periyar Tiger Reserve, and fertile plains. It supports agriculture, drinking water, and hydroelectric power projects, including the famous Idukki Dam. The Periyar’s scenic beauty, surrounded by lush greenery and mist-covered hills, makes it a popular destination for eco-tourism and wildlife enthusiasts. The river also holds cultural significance, with many festivals and rituals celebrated on its banks. Overall, the Periyar River is an essential natural resource, balancing ecological wealth with human needs in Kerala.
