About Nongkrem Festival

If you want to see Khasi culture at its most traditional, Nongkrem Festival is the one to attend. It happens once a year in Smit village near Shillong. Young men and women perform ancient dances in full traditional dress. No stage. No microphone. No Bollywood. Just a centuries-old ritual performed the same way it always has been.

Smit village is just 11 kilometres from Shillong. The drive takes around 20 minutes. Most Meghalaya tour packages do not highlight this enough. It runs for five days every November. Accommodation in Shillong works fine since the village is close. Book your travel dates around the festival calendar and plan the rest of the trip around it.

The festival is especially known for the Nongkrem dance, where men and women wear traditional Khasi attire and perform together with live drum and flute music. Over time, it has also become an important cultural event for visitors interested in Meghalaya’s indigenous traditions.

One of the best trips I’ve taken. The itinerary was perfect, and every destination was unique. Kaziranga safari was the highlight. Highly recommend this 6N/7D tour package.

A well-organized tour with beautiful destinations. Shillong’s landscapes were stunning, and Kaziranga safari was exciting. Minor improvements needed in coordination, but overall very satisfying.
