About National Memorial Chorten

The National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a striking white stupa crowned with a golden spire and sun-moon finial, built in 1974 to honour the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck—known as the “Father of Modern Bhutan.” Conceived by Thinley Norbu Rinpoche and commissioned by the king’s mother, it represents the “mind of Buddha,” with richly painted chapels, mandalas, and guardian deities Unlike many stupas that hold relics, it displays the king’s portrait inside. A central spiritual hub, Bhutanese of all ages circumambulate it daily, spinning prayer wheels and offering prayers. Located near Thimphu’s main roundabout, it stands as both a beloved pilgrimage site and symbol of national devotion and peace
