The National Institute for Zorig Chusum, often called the “painting school,” is Bhutan’s premier arts academy in Thimphu, established in 1971 by royal initiative . It preserves and teaches Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts—ranging from painting, woodcarving, embroidery, and sculpture to metalwork and calligraphy—with intensive four to six-year courses . Students learn skills integral to Bhutan’s spiritual and cultural identity, such as thangka painting and statue-making, often contributing to temple and dzong artwork . Visitors are welcome to watch classes, photograph masterpieces in progress, and buy exquisite handcrafted items from the institute’s showroom . The institute plays a vital role in revitalizing both ancient crafts and contemporary expression in Bhutanese art

This was my first international trip and Bhutan turned out to be the perfect destination. The itinerary was well-balanced with nature and culture. There were some concerns about permits on day one, but the on-ground support team stepped in and sorted it efficiently. Really appreciate how Viacation took care of every little detail.
