About Mawryngkhang Trek

The Mawryngkhang Trek, famously known as the Bamboo Trail, is widely considered the scariest and most thrilling trek in Meghalaya. Located in the remote Wahkhen Village within the East Khasi Hills, the trail consists of a series of interconnected bamboo bridges and ladders built along the edges of steep cliffs and over gushing river streams.

Since the trek involves both road travel and moderate physical effort, many Meghalaya tour packages keep Mawryngkhang as a separate activity day rather than combining it with multiple sightseeing stops. Most visitors spend nearly half a day here, including travel, trekking, and rest breaks along the route.

Significance of Mawryngkhang Trek

Mawryngkhang Trek reflects Meghalaya’s traditional bamboo engineering methods adapted for difficult terrain. Local Khasi communities constructed the bamboo pathways to move across steep cliffs and inaccessible valleys long before tourism reached the region. Even today, large sections of the trek continue using locally maintained bamboo structures instead of permanent concrete routes.

The trek also represents a shift in Meghalaya tourism towards adventure-based experiences. Unlike locations visited mainly for photography, Mawryngkhang requires active participation through climbing, balancing, and continuous movement, making the journey itself the main attraction rather than a single destination point.

Best Time to Visit Mawryngkhang Trek

The best time to visit the Mawryngkhang Trek is during the dry winter months, specifically from October to April. This period offers the safest trekking conditions and the most scenic, clear-sky views. Morning hours between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM are ideal due to cooler temperatures and lower crowd levels. Monsoon months make the bamboo sections slippery and significantly increase trekking difficulty.

How to Reach Mawryngkhang Trek

Wahkhen Village is around 45–50 kilometres from Shillong and takes nearly 2 hours by road. The trek begins directly from the village entry point. Shared taxis for Wahkhen Village are available near Police Bazaar, costing around ₹400 - ₹600 per person. Private cabs usually cost ₹3,000–₹4,500 depending on vehicle type.

One of the best trips I’ve taken. The itinerary was perfect, and every destination was unique. Kaziranga safari was the highlight. Highly recommend this 6N/7D tour package.

A well-organized tour with beautiful destinations. Shillong’s landscapes were stunning, and Kaziranga safari was exciting. Minor improvements needed in coordination, but overall very satisfying.
