About Mawlyngbna

Mawlyngbna is an offbeat village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, India, located about 15 km from Mawsynram and approximately 75 km from Shillong. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the plains of Bangladesh, it has emerged as a premier destination for adventure tourism and geological exploration. In Meghalaya tour packages, it is particularly famous for their rich marine fossils, adventure activities, natural pools, waterfalls, and canyon landscapes.

Significance of Mawlyngbna

Mawlyngbna holds geological and ecological importance due to its fossil-rich landscapes, freshwater systems, and preserved natural surroundings. The village is known for ancient marine fossils discovered in limestone rocks, indicating that this region remained underwater millions of years ago. These formations give Mawlyngbna scientific relevance beyond tourism.

The village also reflects Meghalaya’s growing focus on community-based eco-tourism. Instead of large commercial infrastructure, local residents manage trekking routes, boating activities, campsites, and guided experiences. This keeps the environment relatively less disturbed while allowing travellers to engage directly with the landscape rather than observing it from fixed viewpoints.

Best Time to Visit Mawlyngbna

The best time to visit Mawlyngbna is from October to April, when water activities and trekking conditions remain manageable. Early mornings and late afternoons are more comfortable for outdoor exploration. Monsoon months make waterfalls stronger but can also increase trail slipperiness and limit certain adventure activities.

How to Reach Mawlyngbna

From Shillong, Mawlyngbna is around 45 kilometres away and takes nearly 2 hours by road. Shared taxis towards Mawkyrwat are available from Bara Bazar and Police Bazaar areas, costing around ₹300–₹500 per person. Private cabs usually cost ₹2,500–₹4,000 for a round trip. Since direct public transport is limited, most travellers prefer hiring a cab from Shillong for easier access and return.

One of the best trips I’ve taken. The itinerary was perfect, and every destination was unique. Kaziranga safari was the highlight. Highly recommend this 6N/7D tour package.

A well-organized tour with beautiful destinations. Shillong’s landscapes were stunning, and Kaziranga safari was exciting. Minor improvements needed in coordination, but overall very satisfying.
