Mawjymbuin Cave has been known to the local Khasi community for centuries. The name means cave of the smooth stone in the Khasi language. The natural stalagmite inside was never carved or shaped by human hands. It formed over thousands of years through continuous water drip and mineral deposits.
Hindu pilgrims began visiting the cave after word spread about the Shivalinga-shaped formation. Over time, it became a site of religious significance for both communities. The Meghalaya government developed basic infrastructure around the cave in the 1990s. Lighting was installed, and a proper path was built. Today, it draws both pilgrims and curious travellers throughout the year.
October to April is better for visiting Mawjymbuin Cave. Morning hours are less crowded and easier for exploration. Avoid peak monsoon months, as heavy rain makes the cave surroundings slippery and travel conditions difficult.
Mawjymbuin Cave is in Mawsynram village, 65 kilometres from Shillong via Mawkyrwat. The drive takes around two hours on winding hill roads. Private cabs from Shillong charge ₹1,800 to ₹2,200. No direct bus runs from Shillong to Mawsynram village. From the village it is just 5 minutes away.
