About Ghoom Monastery (Samten Choeling)

Ghoom Monastery, also known as Samten Choeling, is a serene Buddhist sanctuary located in Ghum, approximately 7 km from Darjeeling, India. Established in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso, it follows the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is renowned for its 26-foot statue of Lord Buddha, built in honor of Lama Anagarika Govinda. Visitors can experience the tranquil ambiance during morning and evening prayers, accompanied by the chanting of monks. The monastery houses a rich collection of Buddhist texts and manuscripts. Its location offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys, making it a peaceful retreat for spiritual seekers and tourists alike.
