Dau Go Cave is one of the largest and most visited caves in Halong Bay, Vietnam. It is famous for its three enormous chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites in dramatic shapes. The cave gets its name from the wooden stakes found here during the 13th century. History and natural beauty come together in one place.
Dau Go Cave is located on Dau Go Island, about 8 kilometers from Halong Bay pier. Most cruise operators include this as a standard stop on their Halong Bay itinerary. Vietnam tour packages that cover Halong Bay almost always feature Dau Go as a key highlight. No separate travel needed. The cave is accessible directly by cruise boat from the main pier.
Dau Go Cave has been known to locals for centuries. During the 13th century, Vietnamese military commander Tran Hung Dao stored wooden stakes inside this cave. These stakes were later used to defeat the Mongol fleet in the Battle of Bach Dang River in 1288. That victory is one of the most celebrated moments in Vietnamese military history.
French explorers discovered the cave in the late 19th century and named it Grotte des Merveilles, meaning Cave of Wonders. The name Dau Go came later from the Vietnamese. Tourism development around the cave began after Halong Bay was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Today, it receives thousands of visitors every year as part of standard Halong Bay cruise itineraries.
October to December is the best time. Weather stays clear, humidity drops, and cave visibility is at its best. Visit between 8 AM and 10 AM before the day cruise crowds arrive. Avoid May to August when tropical storms reduce visibility significantly inside the cave.
Dau Go Cave is located on Dau Go Island, 30 kilometers from Ha Long City. It is 177 kilometers from Hanoi. A shuttle bus from Hanoi costs ₹600 to ₹1,800 and takes around 3.5 hours. Most cruise operators include the cave visit and shuttle in their package price directly.
