The Amarnath Cave, located high in the Himalayas of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India.
Every year, thousands of devotees make the challenging journey to the cave to witness the naturally formed ice Shiva Lingam, a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva. Visiting Amarnath is often part of the popular Kashmir tour packages, which highlight India’s history and culture.
The shrine is located at an altitude of 3,888 meters and is accessible only during the summer months, typically from June to August, as the harsh winters make it virtually unreachable. Legend has it that Lord Shiva revealed the secrets of immortality to Goddess Parvati in this cave, making it a sacred destination. In addition to its religious significance, Amarnath has a rich history, with references to ancient texts like the Skanda Purana. Pilgrims often face extreme conditions on this pilgrimage trek.
Open – Late June to August, depending on the weather.
Pilgrims need to register before starting the yatra. There may be additional charges for facilities like medical assistance or transportation.
