In a noteworthy shift, India's wedding planners and couples are increasingly turning their attention to domestic destinations for weddings. This trend emerges following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent public appeal in Telangana, where he encouraged citizens to curtail non-essential foreign expenditures, including lavish international weddings.
During the rally, PM Modi underscored the importance of prioritizing local arrangements, indirectly addressing the soaring trend of Indians opting for overseas weddings. His statements have resonated deeply within the wedding industry, igniting a renewed interest in the enchanting locales within India.
Wedding planners are already observing a rise in inquiries regarding domestic venues. Dakshita Bhatla, the founder of DB and Spaces, noted that India is a popular choice for international couples as well, with stunning locations from Uttarakhand to the historic palaces of Rajasthan and the serene backwaters of Kerala. Bhatla expects a significant uptick in domestic wedding queries this year, as more couples appreciate what their homeland has to offer.
Moreover, industry expert Rahul Rajput from Triyuginarayan Wedding emphasized the positive impact of this trend on local economies. By organizing weddings in regions like Uttarakhand, they engage local communities, fostering job creation and economic growth. Rajput pointed out a recent surge in advance bookings, suggesting that couples are keen to celebrate within India.
Planning trends have also evolved with couples leaning towards venues that provide a sense of safety, convenience, and accessibility. Sneha Sharma from Milaap Events remarked, “Increasingly, families are drawn to domestic locations such as Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala, and Uttarakhand instead of international destinations.”
Additionally, the PM’s comments on gold purchasing are likely to shift mindsets as well. Couples are now more inclined to balance emotional ties to gold with practical spending. For many, this means considering ways to reuse their existing gold rather than investing in new jewelry.
Actor Adrija Roy reflected this sentiment through her own choice, expressing a preference for an Indian wedding in the future, while engaged couple Ankit Bagga and Tanya Ahuja echoed the Prime Minister’s call for more mindful spending. “This is definitely the ideal time to make practical choices,” Bagga remarked, highlighting the importance of being conscientious about financial decisions amidst rising prices and currency fluctuations.
