Meghalaya launched the Chief Minister's Homestay Mission in September 2025, targeting 3,000 new homestays and 15,000 jobs by 2028. The government just approved initial funding, but here's what matters if you're booking a trip.
So far, 80 homestay applications have been approved, with 55 sanctioned financial assistance amounting to ₹3.85 crore. That's 55 homestays against a 3,000-unit target. Construction takes time. If you're traveling in 2026, don't expect a sudden accommodation boom.
What impacts you sooner: toilet facility upgrades at 84 tourist locations, including Ward's Lake, Laitlum Canyons, Krang Suri Falls and Wari Chora. Basic infrastructure improvements at day-trip spots matter more than future homestay promises.
Shillong Airport runway expansion has been officially awarded and is expected to be completed within 15 months, enabling larger aircraft operations. This is significant. Currently, only small regional aircraft land there. Larger planes mean direct connections from major cities without routing through Guwahati. Expect operational changes by late 2027.
Projects under development include the Shillong Ropeway, Mawkdok Skywalk, Rain Museum in Mawsynram, Living Root Bridge Museum and tourism centres in Sohra, Mandalgre and Siju.
The Rain Museum stands out. Mawsynram holds the world rainfall record but has minimal tourist infrastructure. A dedicated museum could turn it into an actual destination. The Living Root Bridge Museum is questionable — those bridges work because they're not commercialized. Adding museum layers might dilute the experience.
Nearly 18 lakh tourist arrivals were recorded in 2025. That's 1.8 million visitors, more than Spiti Valley (50,000–80,000) but less than Ladakh (2.5 million). Meghalaya isn't overcrowded yet. Most tourists concentrate in Shillong and Cherrapunji. Eastern and western districts remain quiet.

Government timelines in Northeast states rarely match announcements. One beneficiary stated that government financial assistance gave him the confidence to begin despite having no prior business experience. Good for local entrepreneurship, but first-time operators need time to establish quality standards.
The airport expansion is the most concrete development. The homestay scheme is ambitious but early-stage. Infrastructure projects are in progress, not completed.
Don't plan your trip based on what Meghalaya will become. The appeal is what it is now accessible but not overdeveloped, cultural but not manufactured. These initiatives will improve logistics by 2027–2028, but they'll also shift the experience.
Book based on current reality, not press release promises.
