About Tyrshi Waterfall

Tyrshi water Fall is a majestic, multi-tiered waterfall located in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India. Often described as Jowai's version of the famous Elephant Falls, it cascades down rocky cliffs into a stunning valley filled with emerald-green rice fields. It is considered a "hidden gem" because it remains less crowded than other major attractions in the state, offering a peaceful and serene environment for nature lovers. Tyrshi Waterfall attracts travellers looking for quieter natural landscapes and short stopovers in their Meghalaya tour packages. You can easily combine it with nearby lakes, caves, and village viewpoints instead of visiting it as a standalone destination.

Significance of Tyrshi Waterfall:

Tyrshi Waterfall reflects the less-commercialised side of Meghalaya tourism, where natural landscapes remain closely connected to surrounding village life and agricultural land. Located in the Jaintia Hills, the area receives heavy rainfall for most of the year, which directly influences the waterfall’s strength and appearance across seasons. Unlike heavily promoted waterfalls near Cherrapunji, Tyrshi remains quieter and less altered by mass tourism activity.

Best Time to Visit Tyrshi Waterfall:

The best time to visit Tyrshi Waterfall is during the monsoon season (June to September), when the falls are at their most powerful and majestic. Early mornings and late afternoons offer better lighting and more comfortable weather. Peak monsoon months may cause slippery pathways and reduced visibility around the falls.

How to Reach Tyrshi Waterfall:

Reach Shillong first from Guwahati by bus or shared taxi, which takes around 3 - 4 hours. From Shillong, shared sumos for Jowai are available near Police Bazaar, usually costing ₹300 - ₹500 per person and taking around 2.5 - 3 hours. From Jowai town, Tyrshi Waterfall is around 5 kilometres away and can be reached by local taxi for approximately ₹200 - ₹400, depending on waiting time.

One of the best trips I’ve taken. The itinerary was perfect, and every destination was unique. Kaziranga safari was the highlight. Highly recommend this 6N/7D tour package.

A well-organized tour with beautiful destinations. Shillong’s landscapes were stunning, and Kaziranga safari was exciting. Minor improvements needed in coordination, but overall very satisfying.
