Sung Sot Cave is a large limestone cave located inside Ha Long Bay. It sits on Bo Hon Island and is reached via a short climb from the dock. The cave is divided into two main chambers with marked walking paths and fixed lighting systems installed for visitors.
Included in Vietnam tour packages, Sung Sot Cave is usually covered as part of a half-day or full-day Ha Long Bay cruise. Travellers visit it alongside nearby stops such as viewpoints and kayaking spots, moving in groups along a defined entry and exit route inside the cave.
Sung Sot Cave was formed over millions of years through water erosion and limestone changes. Locals later discovered it and gave it the name “Surprise Cave” because of how it suddenly opens into massive chambers. The outside looks simple, but inside feels completely different.
There’s also a local belief that some rock formations inside resemble animals and mythological figures. Guides often point out shapes like turtles and dragons. Over time, it became one of the most visited caves in Vietnam, especially after Ha Long Bay got global attention.
Visit between October and April. The temperature stays around 18–25°C with less humidity. Summer months (May to September) get hot (30–35°C) with rain and crowded tours. Avoid peak afternoon hours if you want a quieter experience.
From Hanoi, travel to Ha Long Bay (about 170 km). A bus or cab takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours (₹1000–₹4,500). From the bay, take a boat tour to the cave. Boat rides are usually included in tour packages.
