About Saigon Opera House

Saigon Opera House is located in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City and is famous for its French colonial architecture and live cultural performances. Built in 1898, the theatre hosts concerts, ballet shows, theatre acts, and traditional Vietnamese performances. The AO Show is especially popular for its mix of acrobatics, dance, and bamboo-based stage storytelling.

The Opera House is located on Dong Khoi Street in District 1, right in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City. Everything is walkable from here. Ben Thanh Market is 1 kilometre away. Reunification Palace is 10 minutes by cab. Vietnam tour packages that include Ho Chi Minh City almost always pass this building. Most travellers photograph it from outside, but missing a live performance inside is a mistake worth avoiding.

History of Saigon Opera House

Saigon Opera House was built in 1898 during French colonial rule and originally served as a theatre for French audiences living in Saigon. Its design follows European architectural styles common during that period.

Over the years, the building has been used for different purposes, including as a government assembly hall after Vietnam’s partition. Later, it returned to functioning as a theatre and cultural venue. Today, it remains one of the most recognised colonial-era buildings in Ho Chi Minh City.

Best Time to Visit
