About Presidential Palace, Vietnam

The Presidential Palace in Hanoi is a French colonial building constructed in 1906. It served as the residence of the Governor-General of French Indochina. The building is known for its distinctive yellow facade, grand architecture, and the surrounding gardens that have stayed largely unchanged for over a century. It is one of the finest examples of French colonial architecture still standing in Vietnam.

The palace is in Ba Dinh district, Hanoi. It shares the same complex as the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the One Pillar Pagoda. Vietnam tour packages covering Hanoi almost always include all three in a half-day visit. A Grab cab from Hanoi Old Quarter reaches here in about 10 minutes and costs ₹150 to ₹200.

Significance / History

The French built the Presidential Palace in 1906 as the official residence of the Governor-General of French Indochina. It took four years to complete. The building combined French architectural style with local materials and craftsmanship. It was the most prestigious address in colonial Hanoi for decades.

When Ho Chi Minh took power, he refused to live in the palace. He considered it too grand for a leader of the people. He moved into a small stilt house built on the palace grounds in 1958 and lived there until he died in 1969. The palace itself was used for official state functions and receiving foreign dignitaries.

Best Time to Visit

October to April works best. Hanoi stays dry, and the garden grounds are comfortable to walk through. Visit between 8 AM and 10 AM on weekdays for smaller crowds. Avoid public holidays when the entire Ba Dinh complex gets significantly busier than usual.

How to Reach

The Presidential Palace is in Ba Dinh district, 3 kilometers from the Hanoi Old Quarter. A Grab cab takes around 10 minutes and costs ₹150 to ₹200. The palace shares a complex with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the One Pillar Pagoda. Cover all three in one visit without any additional travel needed.
