About One Pillar Pagoda

One Pillar Pagoda is one of the oldest and most recognised structures in Vietnam. Built in 1049 during the Ly Dynasty, it is a small wooden pagoda rising from a single stone pillar in the middle of a square pond. The design represents a lotus flower emerging from water. It is a working religious site, not just a photo stop.

The pagoda is in the Ba Dinh district of Hanoi, right next to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Both sites share the same complex area. Vietnam tour packages that include Hanoi almost always cover both in a half-day visit. Getting here from the Hanoi Old Quarter takes around 10 to 15 minutes by Grab cab.

Significance / History of One Pillar Pagoda:

Emperor Ly Thai Tong built the One Pillar Pagoda in 1049 after dreaming of the Goddess of Mercy presenting him a son while seated on a lotus flower. He later had a son and constructed the pagoda as an act of gratitude. The lotus design directly references that dream.

French forces destroyed the original structure before leaving Vietnam in 1954. The current pagoda was rebuilt by the Vietnamese government shortly after. It follows the original design closely, but the present structure is not the original 1049. That detail matters if historical authenticity is important to you.

Best Time to Visit One Pillar Pagoda:

October to April is ideal. Hanoi stays dry, and temperatures remain comfortable between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. Visit between 8 AM and 10 AM on weekdays for smaller crowds. Avoid weekends when the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex draws large domestic tour groups nearby.

How to Reach One Pillar Pagoda:

One Pillar Pagoda is in Ba Dinh district, about 3 kilometres from the Hanoi Old Quarter. A Grab cab from the Old Quarter costs ₹150 to ₹200 and takes around 10 minutes. The pagoda shares an entrance area with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, so both can be covered in one trip.
