About Old Quarter, Vietnam

The Old Quarter is the oldest part of Hanoi, known for its narrow streets and old shop houses. It is famous for its traditional trade streets and strong local culture. This area shows how people have lived, worked, and traded here for generations. It is a group of 36 streets, also famously known as Ha Noi 36 Pho.

The Old Quarter connects easily to places like Hoan Kiem Lake and nearby markets. Most Vietnam tour packages include it as a central stop. From the city center, you can walk or take a short cab ride of 5–10 minutes, making it simple to reach anytime.

Significance of Old Quarter

The Old Quarter goes back over 1,000 years. It started as a trading area where each street sold one type of product. You still see that pattern today. One street for silver, another for clothes, another for herbs. The names of the streets even reflect these old trades.

During different periods, especially under French rule, the area changed but never lost its local identity. You’ll notice old Vietnamese houses mixed with colonial buildings. Some homes are long and narrow because taxes were once based on street frontage.

There’s no single monument here. The whole place is the experience. Early morning, locals practice tai chi near Hoan Kiem Lake. By night, the same area turns into a crowded food zone. It shows how the city lives, not just how it looks.

Best Time to Visit

October to April is considered the best. At this time, temperatures stay around 18°C to 28°C. Summer (May to September) gets hot and humid, often above 35°C, with sudden rain. Don't go outside at peak afternoons during summer. Visiting early in the morning is better, easier, and more comfortable.

How to Reach the Old Quarter

From Noi Bai International Airport, take a cab to the Old Quarter. It takes 30–45 minutes(28 km). Taxi costs around ₹400–₹1300. You can also take a public bus for ₹50–₹160, but it takes longer and requires a short walk.
