About Mud Village

Mud Village sits at the far end of the Pin Valley in Himachal Pradesh and is often considered one of the last motorable settlements in the region. Surrounded by dry mountains, glacial streams, and wide open valleys, the village is far more isolated compared to the busier parts of Spiti like Kaza and Kalpa. The landscape here changes constantly through the day, especially during sunrise and late evening when the mountains reflect different shades of brown, orange, and grey.

Travellers covering remote routes through Spiti Valley usually include Mud Village in Spiti Valley tour packages because the area connects directly with trekking trails, Pin Valley National Park surroundings, and slower village-based stays instead of regular sightseeing movement. Many visitors choose to stay overnight rather than return immediately to Kaza.

Importance of Mud Village

Mud Village is important because it serves as the gateway to Pin Valley and several high-altitude trekking routes in Spiti. The village also reflects traditional Himalayan living through its mud houses, farming practices, and Buddhist culture. Located near Pin Valley National Park, the area is environmentally significant for its rare wildlife and untouched mountain landscapes.

Unlike heavily commercial mountain towns, Mud Village still preserves a quieter rural atmosphere where traditional mud houses, farming practices, and Buddhist influences remain visible in daily life.

Best Time to Visit Mud Village

The best time to visit Mud Village Spiti is from May to September, when road access to Mud Village remains most comfortable, and when weather conditions stay stable. Late afternoon hours are especially suitable for photography because sunlight spreads evenly across the valley and surrounding barren peaks.

How to Reach Mud Village

Mud village is around 50 kilometres away from Kaza. Shared taxis towards Pin Valley are limited, so most travellers hire private cabs costing approximately ₹3,000–₹5,500 for round trips, depending on stops and waiting time. The drive takes around 2–3 hours through villages like Gulling, Kungri, and Sagnam.

Being from Sikkim I thought I knew cold. Spiti in winter is another level completely. What I loved was how untouched everything felt. No crowds at any of the monasteries, no noise in Kibber, just snow...
