Mawsynram is a village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. It is known as one of the wettest places on Earth because of its extremely high yearly rainfall. Located at around 1,400 metres above sea level, the area stays cloudy, green, and mist-covered for most of the year. The village is also known for limestone caves, waterfalls, and changing weather conditions.
If you are building Meghalaya tour packages, pair it with Mawsmai Cave, Nohkalikai Falls, and Mawkdok Valley Viewpoint. All are nearby. Mawsynram is the headline. The surrounding area gives you plenty more to do.
Mawsynram was a quiet farming village for most of its history. The Khasi people grew betel nut, turmeric, and vegetables on the surrounding hillsides. Nobody outside the district paid much attention to it. That changed in 1985 when the Guinness Book of World Records officially declared it the wettest place on Earth, replacing Cherrapunji.
Tourists started arriving slowly after that. Infrastructure remained basic for years. It was only after 2015 that homestays, small dhabas, and proper road access developed enough to make a visit comfortable for regular travellers.
October to April is ideal. Skies stay clear, and temperatures sit between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. June and July bring 2,000 to 3,000 millimetres of rain monthly. Roads flood, and visibility drops sharply. Avoid June to August unless experiencing the monsoon is specifically why you are coming.
Mawsynram sits 60 kilometres from Shillong in East Khasi Hills. The nearest airport is Umroi in Shillong. Most travellers fly into Guwahati and drive to Shillong first. The nearest railway station is Guwahati. From Shillong, take a private cab via Mawkyrwat. The drive takes around two hours.
