About Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project

Nestled along Sri Lanka’s southern coast in Kosgoda, the Sea Turtle Conservation Project is a vital sanctuary dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles. Serving as the country’s oldest hatchery, it rescues and incubates eggs from five threatened species—Green, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Leatherback—safeguarding them from predators and poachers. Visitors can witness hatchlings being carefully released into the ocean at dusk, and learn about turtle biology, conservation efforts, and beach protection in the informative on-site centre. The project also rehabilitates injured turtles and engages local communities and volunteers in nightly beach patrols. It offers a meaningful, educational experience blending wildlife preservation, community care, and responsible eco-tourism.
