About Dinh Huong Island

Dinh Huong Island is a small limestone islet located in Ha Long Bay, recognized for its shape that resembles an incense burner floating on water. Unlike larger islands with activities or caves, this spot is mainly viewed during cruise routes passing through the bay.

Many travellers first notice the island because of its appearance on Vietnam’s 200,000-dong currency note. It is commonly seen during sightseeing cruises included in Vietnam tour packages, especially on routes covering central areas of Ha Long Bay alongside nearby limestone formations and floating fishing villages.

Significance of Dinh Huong Island

Dinh Huong Island is considered one of the symbolic limestone formations of Ha Long Bay. Its incense burner shape gave the island its name, as “Dinh Huong” refers to a traditional incense holder used in Vietnamese culture.

The island became more widely recognized after appearing on Vietnam’s currency note. Over time, it turned into a visual landmark for Ha Long Bay cruises and tourism photography, even though visitors usually view it from boats rather than stepping onto the island itself.

Best Time to Visit

March to May and October to December offer clearer skies and calmer bay conditions. Morning cruises provide better visibility for photos. Avoid July and August, as storms and heavy rain can affect Ha Long Bay routes.

How to Reach Dinh Huong Island

Cruises departing from Ha Long usually pass Dinh Huong Island during Ha Long Bay sightseeing routes. Boat tours take 4–6 hours on average, depending on the selected cruise itinerary.
