About Brihadeeswarar Temple, Tanjore

The Brihadeeswarar Temple in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu, is a magnificent example of Chola architecture and one of India’s greatest Hindu temples. Built in the 11th century by Raja Raja Chola I, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple’s towering vimana (temple tower) rises about 66 meters, making it one of the tallest of its kind. Constructed entirely from granite, the temple features intricate carvings, massive sculptures, and detailed frescoes that showcase the artistic brilliance of the Chola dynasty. Its massive Nandi statue, carved from a single stone, is a remarkable highlight. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the “Great Living Chola Temples,” the Brihadeeswarar Temple continues to be a significant cultural, religious, and architectural landmark attracting pilgrims and tourists from around the world.
