About Bai Tu Long Bay, Vietnam

Bai Tu Long Bay is the lesser-visited section of the broader Halong Bay region in northeast Vietnam. It covers around 2,200 square kilometres of limestone karsts, forested islands, and calm open water. The main reason people choose Bai Tu Long over Halong Bay is simply fewer boats, quieter anchorages, and a more genuine experience of what this coastline actually looks like without crowds.

Most travellers reach it through overnight cruise operators based in Ha Long City or Hanoi. Vietnam tour packages rarely include Bai Tu Long as a standard stop. It takes deliberate planning to get here. That is exactly what keeps it quieter than its more famous neighbour next door.

Significance / History of Bai Tu Long Bay

Bai Tu Long translates to "where the dragon's children descended." Vietnamese legend says a mother dragon and her children spat out jewels that formed the islands of Halong Bay. Bai Tu Long marks where the children landed. The name separates it geographically and culturally from the main Halong Bay area.

Bai Tu Long was designated a National Park in 2001, covering the Van Don district. The area includes Cong Do Island, Co To Island, and several smaller uninhabited islands. Fishing communities have worked these waters for generations. Tourism development here has been deliberately slow compared to Halong Bay, which is both its strength and its limitation for travellers expecting facilities.

Best Time to Visit Bai Tu Long Bay

October to April gives the clearest skies and calmest water. Visibility is good, and overnight cruises are comfortable during this window. April and May warm up but remain manageable. Avoid June to September when storms roll through, and rough water makes cruising unpleasant and sometimes unsafe.

How to Reach Bai Tu Long Bay

Ha Long City is 170 kilometres from Hanoi by road. A shuttle bus takes around 3.5 hours and costs ₹420 to ₹1,260. From Ha Long City, cruise boats depart from Tuan Chau Marina or Hon Gai pier into Bai Tu Long Bay. The sea route from the pier to the bay takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by boat.
