Suraj Tal, also called Surya Tal or the "Lake of the Sun God," is a high-altitude glacial lake at 4,950 metres (16,240 feet) in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. It is the third-highest lake in India and the 21st-highest in the world. The lake lies just below the Baralacha La pass and is the source of the Bhaga River, a major tributary of the Chenab. Suraj Tal is a popular stop on the Manali-Leh highway and features in most Ladakh tour packages. Travellers visit it for its emerald-blue water, mountain views, and sacred legend.
Suraj Tal plays many roles. It is the source of the Bhaga River, which joins the Chandra at Tandi to form the Chandrabhaga, later known as the Chenab once it enters Jammu. The lake feeds water used for farming and drinking far downstream. Hindus and Buddhists in the area treat it as sacred, and many believe a dip washes away sins. For travellers on the Manali-Leh route, it is a popular rest stop and a key spot to slowly get used to the thin mountain air before heading deeper into Ladakh.
Suraj Tal's history is mostly tied to myth, not written record. The name comes from the Hindi words Suraj (sun) and Tal (lake). Local stories say the sun god Surya bathed here before rising each morning. A Lahauli folk tale tells of Bhaga, son of the sun, and Chandra, daughter of the moon, who met at Baralacha La and ran away to marry. Bhaga landed where Suraj Tal sits today; Chandra landed at Chandra Tal. Their rivers finally meet at Tandi. The Indian Army calls it Vishal Tal in memory of a fallen soldier. Modern road access came in the 1960s when the Border Roads Organisation built the Manali-Leh highway through Baralacha.
The best time to visit Suraj Tal is between June and September, when the Manali-Leh highway stays open, and snow has melted off Baralacha pass. Try to reach the lake between 10 AM and 2 PM, the light is best for photos, and strong winds usually pick up after 3 PM.
Suraj Tal sits approx 145 km north of Manali on the Manali-Leh highway (NH3). Hire a private taxi from Manali Bus Stand or Mall Road, an Innova or Tempo Traveller costs ₹6,000–₹8,000 round trip in 2026. Shared HRTC Manali-Leh bus seats cost ₹1,500–₹2,500. Drive time is 4–5 hours one way. No permit needed.

Great Trip. Very Adventurous indeed. Sent that postcard from Hikkim to my grandmother who has always wanted to travel but couldn't. She called me crying. That one small thing made me emotional the whole evening. The package was great but that moment is what I'll carry forever. Thank you Viacation.

Being from Sikkim I thought I knew cold. Spiti in winter is another level completely. What I loved was how untouched everything felt. No crowds at any of the monasteries, no noise in Kibber, just snow and silence everywhere. Viacation planned this beautifully.
