On May 19, 2026, Thailand's Cabinet approved significant amendments to its visa exemption regulations, ending the previous 60-day visa-free entry arrangement that was applicable to visitors from 93 nations, including India. This transition signals a new tiered entry system designed to enhance the monitoring of border crossings.
As a result, India will no longer have temporary visa-free entry to Thailand. The new rules will start 15 days after they are officially published in the Royal Gazette, Thailand’s government journal. However, travelers who already booked their flights before the announcement do not need to worry. Thai authorities confirmed that the new rules will not affect existing bookings. Visitors entering Thailand under the old rules can still stay until the validity allowed on their passport.
Before confirming any non-refundable accommodations or travel plans within Thailand, it is advisable to check the latest travel advisories on the official Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for updated information.
This policy shift comes as part of Thailand's aggressive strategy to rejuvenate its tourism-dependent economy, which faced considerable challenges due to the pandemic's impact. Since easing border restrictions in July 2024, the country has encountered an increase in various criminal activities, including online scams and the operation of illegal businesses by foreign nationals. This has prompted the Thai government to adopt stricter immigration controls to protect both tourists and its citizens.
