Best Time to Visit Thimphu:

Monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rain, which may limit outdoor activities. However, the hills and valleys become lush and green. Summer, in April and May, is warm and good for exploring festivals and local events. Most tourists prefer the winter and early spring months for pleasant weather.


How to Reach Thimphu:

By Air:

  1. Nearest Airport: Paro International Airport (about 50 km from Thimphu).
  2. Time Taken: Around 1.5 hours by taxi or car from the airport.
  3. Airlines: Druk Air, Bhutan Airlines, Air India, and some connecting flights via Kolkata or Delhi.

By Train:

  1. There is no direct train to Thimphu. Travellers can take a train to Hasimara or New Jalpaiguri and then travel by road.
  2. Time Taken: Around 6–8 hours from Hasimara or NJP to Thimphu by car or bus.

By Road:

Thimphu is well connected by road from Phuentsholing. Taxis, buses, and shared jeeps are available. The journey from Phuentsholing takes about 5–6 hours through scenic mountain roads.


Places to Visit in Thimphu:

There are several places to visit in Thimphu. Here are some of them:


  1. Buddha Dordenma: One of the largest Buddha statues in the world, offering breathtaking views of the valley. A peaceful place for meditation and photography. Visitors can also enjoy the beautiful gardens surrounding the statue.
  2. Tashichho Dzong: A historic fortress and monastery housing the government offices and monks. It is especially beautiful at sunset. Tourists can admire the traditional Bhutanese architecture and attend prayers if open to the public.

  5. Motithang Takin Preserve: A wildlife sanctuary where you can see Bhutan’s national animal, the Takin. It is perfect for families and nature lovers. The preserve also has information boards about the animal and its habitat.
