About Tawang
Tawang, located in Arunachal Pradesh at an altitude of around 10,000 feet, is a breathtaking Himalayan destination known for its snow covered landscapes, monasteries, and strong Tibetan Buddhist culture. Surrounded by towering peaks and alpine lakes, it is one of the most sought after places in Northeast India. The highlight of the region is the famous Tawang Monastery, the largest in India and second largest in the world, offering spiritual calm along with panoramic valley views. Other must visit attractions include the stunning Sela Pass, often covered in snow and home to a beautiful high altitude lake, the serene Madhuri Lake, and the historic Tawang War Memorial dedicated to soldiers of the 1962 Indo China war. With colorful prayer flags, monasteries, and peaceful surroundings, Tawang offers a deeply immersive cultural and natural experience.
The best time to visit Tawang is from March to June and September to November for clear weather and comfortable travel, while winters bring heavy snowfall and extreme cold but also magical snowy landscapes. Tawang is accessible by road from Tezpur or Guwahati, with the nearest airport at Tezpur and railhead also at Tezpur or Guwahati. An Inner Line Permit is required for Indian travellers to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Accommodation includes hotels, guesthouses, and homestays, and travellers should carry heavy woollens, plan for long mountain drives, and stay prepared for limited connectivity in remote areas.
