How to Reach Shimla

1. By Air

  1. Nearest Airport: The closest airport is Chandigarh (120 km from Shimla). From here, travelers can hire taxis or take buses, which take around 3–4 hours to reach Shimla.
  2. Direct Flights: From Delhi: 1 hr flight to Chandigarh + 3 hrs road trip. Airlines: IndiGo, Vistara, Air India.
  3. Connecting Flights: From cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, flights are available via Delhi or Jaipur to Chandigarh. Travel time is 5–6 hrs, including road travel.
  4. Alternative Airport: Jubbarhatti Airport (23 km from Shimla) is technically the closest, but flights are rare and often canceled due to weather. Chandigarh remains the most reliable option.


2. By Rail

Shimla is connected to Kalka via the historic Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The toy train covers 96 km in about 5–6 hours, passing through 102 tunnels, pine-covered hills, and stone bridges, making it one of the most memorable train journeys in India.

From Delhi or Chandigarh, you can take a regular train to Kalka, and then board the toy train to Shimla.


3. By Road

Shimla is well-connected via NH-5 and other highways, making it easily accessible by bus, taxi, or private car.

  1. From Delhi: 350 km (approx. 8–9 hrs by car or overnight Volvo bus).
  2. From Chandigarh: 120 km (approx. 3–4 hrs).
  3. Bus Services: State-run HRTC Volvos and private luxury coaches operate daily from Delhi and Chandigarh. These are affordable, comfortable, and reliable.
  4. Taxi & Self-Drive: Hiring a cab or driving yourself gives flexibility to stop at viewpoints, tea stalls, and dhabas along the way. The route offers stunning views of pine forests and valleys.
