Mtskheta

Every journey leaves you with a story

About Mtskheta

Mtskheta, located at the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers just north of Tbilisi, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Georgia. Once the heart of ancient Iberia, it remains Georgia’s spiritual capital, giving every traveler a taste of its history, faith, and breathtaking scenery. When you start walking through its cobbled streets, you get to experience its medieval churches, monastery spires, and ancient ruins that whisper tales of emperors, saints, and cross-laden hillsides. UNESCO declared its core monuments, such as the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Jvari Monastery, and Samtavro Monastery—collectively the “Historical Monuments of Mtskheta”- recognising their architectural, historical, and religious significance.

Mtskheta presents both peace and magnificence in equal parts, so it becomes a must-addition in Georgia tour packages. Beyond monuments, Mtskheta pulses with culture: locals selling churchkhela in the old bazaar, cafés with views across river valleys, and backdrop vistas that shift from lush green in summer to snow-capped white in winter. Visitors often pair Mtskheta Tourism with a hotel base in Tbilisi, making it ideal for day-trips that are immersive without being exhausting.
