Zoji La is a high-altitude mountain pass located on the Srinagar–Leh highway, connecting Jammu and Kashmir with Ladakh. Sitting at an altitude of around 11,500 feet, the pass is known for its steep mountain roads, changing weather conditions, and some wonderful Himalayan landscapes. It acts as one of the most important road gateways into Ladakh, especially for travellers entering by road from Srinagar.
Since weather and road conditions directly affect movement in Ladakh tour packages, crossing Zoji La early in the journey reduces altitude stress before reaching higher sections like Leh or Nubra Valley.
Zoji La holds major geographical and strategic importance because it serves as a critical link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Historically, the pass has been essential for trade, military transport, and regional connectivity through the Himalayas. Due to heavy snowfall, access remains seasonal, making it one of the most closely monitored mountain routes in northern India.
Crossing the pass becomes an important transition point where travellers move from greener Kashmir landscapes into the colder, barren terrain of Ladakh.
The best time to visit Zoji La Pass is from May to October, when the road is officially open and safest for travel. May and June are ideal for viewing snow-capped scenery, while July to September offer green landscapes; October is best for autumn colors and fewer crowds. The pass is closed during winter (November to April) due to extreme snowfall and dangerous conditions.
Zoji La comes nearly 100 kilometres after Srinagar on the Srinagar–Leh highway, and the drive takes around 3–4 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.
You can take shared taxis and buses to Leh, which are available from Srinagar’s TRC Taxi Stand, costing around ₹700–₹2,500 per person depending on vehicle type. Private taxis to Leh usually cost ₹15,000–₹25,000.
