In the lush Western Ghats of Kerala, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a verdant paradise spanning 344 square kilometres. This sanctuary was established in 1973 and is home to some of India’s most magnificent wildlife. What makes it special is that it's connected to two other protected areas - Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka, and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu, creating a massive haven for animals to roam freely.
The sanctuary has an interesting story - it was once the hunting ground of British officials during colonial times. Today, it's completely transformed into a conservation success story. Many Kerala tour packages prominently feature this gem, and for good reason. The sanctuary is home to rare species like Indian bison, tigers, and elephants. The most fascinating part is that the refuge includes the ancestral lands of local tribes who still live here and helps in conservation efforts. Their deep knowledge of the forest has been crucial in protecting this wildlife wonder.
