Tso Moriri Lake is a high-altitude lake located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, close to the Tibet border. The lake sits above 4,500 metres and is surrounded by dry mountains, open grasslands, and small Changpa settlements. Roads to the lake are long and remote, with very few stops in between.
Unlike Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri feels quieter and less commercial. It is often included in extended Ladakh tour packages for travellers exploring eastern Ladakh beyond the main tourist circuit. The area is known for changing lake colours, migratory birds, and overnight stays in basic camps or homestays near Korzok village.
Tso Moriri Lake is one of the highest freshwater lakes in India and holds ecological importance in the Changthang region. The lake supports wildlife like black-necked cranes, Himalayan birds, and wild animals adapted to high-altitude conditions.
The nearby Korzok village has traditionally been linked to the Changpa nomadic community, who move across Ladakh with livestock depending on the season. Over time, Tso Moriri became an important stop for travellers interested in remote landscapes, wildlife, and less crowded routes in Ladakh.
Plan your visit between June and September. Roads remain open, and temperatures stay between 5°C and 20°C. Morning hours offer calmer lake views. Winters bring extreme cold, frozen roads, and restricted access.
From Leh, hire a private SUV (220 km, 7–8 hours, ₹14,000–₹16,000 for a round trip). There are no regular buses, so a private or shared taxi is necessary. The most common route is via Upshi and Chumathang, offering a chance to see the Indus River and geothermal hot springs along the way.

Yes, Tso Moriri is a high-altitude saltwater (brackish) lake. While its water is slightly salty and not used for drinking, its unique mineral balance creates an ecosystem that supports rare migratory birds.
The drive from Leh typically takes 7 to 8 hours to cover the 220 km distance. The journey involves travelling through rugged mountain terrain, unpaved dirt tracks, and scenic high-altitude passes.
It is famous for being the highest Ramsar site in the world and a critical breeding ground for the endangered Black-necked Crane. It is also known for its stunning, multi-hued blue waters.
Legend says a girl named Tsomo was chasing a yak across the frozen lake. She cried "Ri-Ri" to call it back, but the ice broke, and both vanished. The lake was named "Tsomo-Ri" in her memory.
