The Lion Monument, or Löwendenkmal, is a deeply moving sculpture located in Lucerne, Switzerland. Carved into a sandstone cliff in 1821, it commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the Swiss Guards who died protecting King Louis XVI during the French Revolution in 1792. Designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved by Lukas Ahorn, the monument features a dying lion impaled by a spear, resting atop shields bearing the fleur-de-lis of France and the Swiss cross. Surrounded by a tranquil park and reflecting pond, the monument evokes solemn reflection. Mark Twain called it “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.”
