Stok Palace is a historic royal residence located in Stok Village, around 15 kilometres from Leh in Ladakh. Built in 1820 by King Tsepal Tondup Namgyal, the palace still belongs to the Namgyal royal family and functions partly as a museum and heritage site. Unlike large fortress-style monasteries in Ladakh, Stok Palace feels more residential and personal, giving visitors a closer look at royal life, architecture, and preserved artefacts from the region’s monarchy.
The best way to explore Stok Palace is when you come from Pangong to Leh on the last day of Ladakh tour packages instead of treating it as a separate full-day excursion. The surrounding mountain backdrop and quieter village setting also make the visit feel less crowded compared to central Leh landmarks.
Stok Palace was built in 1820 by King Tsepal Tondup Namgyal after the Namgyal dynasty lost control of Leh during the Dogra invasion of Ladakh. The royal family shifted their residence to Stok Village, where the palace later became the main seat of the former Ladakhi monarchy.
Designed using traditional Ladakhi architectural styles, the structure preserved royal belongings, ceremonial items, Buddhist artefacts, and historical manuscripts over generations. Unlike abandoned heritage sites, Stok Palace continued functioning as a living royal residence for decades. Today, it operates partly as a museum and heritage property while still maintaining connections with Ladakh’s royal lineage.
The absolute best time to visit Stok Palace is between June and September. During these summer months, the weather is mild (15°C to 25°C) and the surrounding landscapes are lush with greenery and blooming flowers
The palace is located around 30–40 minutes from Leh and can be reached directly by road. Take shared taxis for Stok Village from Leh market, easily available near the taxi stand, costing around ₹1,500–₹2,500 for a round-trip travel. Shared local vehicles are cheaper but less frequent.
