




Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple (locally known as Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang) is one of Bali’s oldest, most sacred Hindu temples located on the slopes of Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem, East Bali. Positioned 1,000 meters above sea level, it is one of the six holiest directional sanctuaries meant to maintain spiritual balance on the island. It is globally famous for its iconic “Gate of Heaven” photography, and Bali tour packages are chosen just to click a picture here as it offers a direct view of Mount Agung volcano.

The best time to visit Penataran Agung Lempuyang Temple (the "Gates of Heaven") is early morning (before 07:00 or sunrise) to avoid massive queues, or late afternoon (after 15:00) for a calmer experience and better lighting for photos.
From Ubud, the temple is around 2.5 - 3 hours away by road, while travel from Seminyak or Kuta usually takes 3 - 4 hours.
Private taxis and day-tour drivers are the most common options, costing around ₹4,500–₹7,500 for a full-day East Bali trip including Pura Besakih, Tirta Gangga Water Palace, Goa Lawah Temple (Bat Cave), and other natural attractions like waterfalls. Limited local transport operates in this region, so self-drive scooters or private vehicles remain the most practical choice.
