About Leh Palace

Leh Palace, also known as Lhachen Palkhar, is a 17th-century royal residence perched atop Namgyal Hill in Leh, Ladakh. Commissioned by King Sengge Namgyal, the nine-story structure was modeled after Tibet's Potala Palace, featuring traditional Tibetan architecture with mud, stone, and wood. The upper floors housed the royal family, while the lower levels contained storerooms and stables. Abandoned in the mid-19th century following the Dogra invasion, the palace fell into disrepair. Today, under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, it serves as a museum showcasing thangkas, royal artifacts, and offers panoramic views of Leh and the surrounding Himalayas.
