The Karni Mata Temple, located in Deshnoke near Bikaner, Rajasthan, is a unique Hindu shrine renowned for its resident population of over 25,000 rats, known as kābā, which are revered as sacred. Dedicated to Karni Mata, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga, the temple's origins trace back to the 15th century, with significant expansions completed in the early 20th century under Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. The temple's architecture features a striking marble façade and intricately carved silver doors. Devotees offer food to the rats, believing them to be reincarnated souls of Karni Mata's followers. Spotting a rare white rat is considered especially auspicious. The temple hosts grand fairs during the Navratri festivals in March–April and September–October, attracting pilgrims from across India.
